Joint forces in Yemen conducted a successful raid in Seiyun, Hadramaut, targeting Abu Hudhayfah al-Ansari, a senior "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) spokesman.

This operation, executed on September 1, followed extensive surveillance and tracking of the group's leadership movements across the region.

Security units surrounded a mud-brick building where al-Ansari was hiding, and explosions were heard shortly before his confirmed death occurred.

Reports indicated that a second individual present at the scene was also killed during this high-stakes, decisive counter-terrorism operation.

Spokesman's role within terrorist group

Al-Ansari, appointed as the group's official spokesman in August 2023, had recently issued aggressive propaganda statements targeting the Syrian government.

Known by the alias Mithaq al-Radfani, he was a top-tier leader who remained elusive due to the group's strict security.

He was rarely seen without a suicide belt, making him an incredibly difficult and dangerous target to capture for security forces.

Major security success

"The execution of this operation by joint forces involving Saudi-led coalition forces, and Yemeni counter-terrorism units deserves genuine praise," armed groups expert Saeed al-Jamhi told Al-Fassel.

"There are forces actively fulfilling their role in tracking extremist terrorist groups," he said, highlighting the precision of the entire mission.

The loss of such key figures deals a severe blow, as these leaders are essential for managing and mobilizing terrorist elements.

Strategic shifts and public vigilance

The group likely chose Seiyun, a city known for Sufi traditions, to hide because they viewed it as an unexpected location.

"This is a major achievement, underscoring the state's role in eliminating terrorism and criminals," Abaad Center for Studies director Abdul Salam Mohammed said.

"This achievement instills confidence in the Yemeni state and paves the way for new partnerships in fighting terrorism," he added.

Citizens play a vital role by monitoring suspicious activities and reporting them to security agencies, which remains crucial for future successes.

ISIS currently faces internal rifts and ideological struggles, as it tries to survive the systematic loss of its top-tier operational leaders.
