A highly coordinated joint military operation by Nigerian and US forces targeted the strategic Lake Chad Basin region on May 16.

This targeted action resulted in the elimination of Bilal al-Manuki, a critical senior leader in the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Al-Manuki was considered the group's global second-in-command, signifying a devastating rupture in its fundamental hierarchy.

He enhanced the combat capabilities of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) by introducing specialized warfare tactics and methods utilized across the Middle East.

Al-Manuki was recognized as the mastermind behind ISIS networks globally, overseeing strategic planning, finance, and logistics operations.

He also directed the advanced development of explosives and drones while managing extensive operations across continents.

"The Middle East is now physically impenetrable to any actual ISIS presence," Saudi military expert Mansour al-Shehri told Al-Fassel.

"Consequently, the remaining leadership was forced to relocate to unstable African regions to establish a new organizational structure," he added.

This new structure aimed to enable them to mobilize once again for terrorist operations across multiple vulnerable nations.

A devastating blow to ISIS leadership

These critical leadership movements remained under intense scrutiny by the United States, which actively pursues dangerous terrorists worldwide.

Extensive surveillance and intelligence-gathering efforts were conducted collaboratively with numerous essential African partner nations.

This crucial joint effort ultimately enabled the timely discovery of the prominent ISIS leader’s well-concealed Nigerian hideout.

"Al-Manuki’s elimination delivers a profound blow that will produce significant future repercussions for the entire terrorist group," al-Shehri said.

He noted that al-Manuki recruited experienced foreign fighters who introduced critical new combat tactics to the African region.

These introduced tactics included intensive nighttime military operations and the advanced use of sophisticated improvised explosive devices.

Most significantly, al-Manuki pioneered the use of drones for both critical surveillance and for executing precise bombing missions.

Operational coordination

The meticulously planned operation highlights a rare and advanced level of crucial intelligence sharing between the US and Nigeria.

"US-Nigerian cooperation is an absolute necessity for sustained regional and global stability," Zeina Mahmoud, a researcher specializing in international affairs, told Al-Fassel.

"Al-Manuki was a global threat, directing supply lines, recruitment, financing, bombings, and complex hostage-taking incidents," she added.

Given the United States' role as the spearhead against terrorist groups, alliances with key African nations are now fundamentally imperative.

Mahmoud expects the coming period to reveal further crucial US-African alliances specifically aimed at effectively combating regional terrorism.
