Sanctions expose Hamas's exploitation of charities to finance operations
New sanctions target front charities that funneled millions in humanitarian funds to Hamas, leaving civilians without critical resources while undermining genuine aid efforts.

Terrorist organizations often operate in the shadows, yet their most sinister actions can occur in plain sight.
Hamas has long exploited humanitarian aid, charities and civilian organizations to fund its violent agenda.
The recent sanctions imposed by the US Department of the Treasury (TREAS) target six Gaza-based non-profits as well as the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad.
These actions highlight how such organizations have deprived civilians of essential humanitarian aid, amplifying the challenges faced by vulnerable populations.
By sanctioning these entities, TREAS aims to sever terrorist funding while safeguarding the integrity of legitimate aid efforts for Palestinians.
Front charities
Hamas uses a network of covert organizations disguised as legitimate charities to fund its military wing, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, according to TREAS findings.
Entities such as the Waed Society, al-Nur Society and al-Falah Society are key players in this financial network.
Internal Hamas documents reveal detailed instructions provided to fighters on navigating bureaucracy to request funds for projects and services from said entities.
For instance, evidence showed one organization, al-Falah Society, transferred over $2.5 million to Hamas in just three years.
These calculated deception practices deprive innocent civilians in need of essential services while enabling violence.
"Hamas continues to show a callous disregard for the welfare of the Palestinian people," said John K. Hurley, Under Secretary of TREAS.
He added that the US administration "will not look the other way while Hamas leadership and enablers exploit the financial system to fund terrorist operations."
Sanctions protect civilians and aid efforts
Hamas deliberately embeds its operations within civilian structures, placing innocent people in harm's way.
By using charities and non-profits as financial shields, Hamas undermines global efforts to deliver genuine aid and foster peace.
The sanctions aim to dismantle these financial webs and restrict terror financing while restoring donor confidence in humanitarian aid for Palestinians.
They also reveal Hamas's clear disregard for the welfare of Palestinian civilians, prioritizing its political and militant goals over their needs.
