The Iranian regime is grappling with a domestic security crisis as its inability to prevent attacks on government institutions exposes critical weaknesses in its security apparatus and highlights growing internal instability, analysts said.

In a July 26 incident, gunmen successfully breached the judiciary building in Sistan and Baluchestan province, penetrating government defenses and causing multiple casualties before authorities could regain control.

Nine people, including three assailants, were killed and 20 others wounded in the attack, according to media reports.

The coordinated nature of the assault, executed by trained operatives, underscores the inadequacy of existing security measures protecting state institutions, analysts observed.

"Iran is wracked by a state of instability that has become worrisome not only for Iran itself but for the region as a whole," Iranian affairs expert Fathi al-Sayed told Al-Fassel.

The crisis stems from multiple sources, including a severe financial crisis that has devastated purchasing power and weakened the economy, he said.

Riots, demonstrations and violent clashes with security forces in southeastern regions of the country are the most persistent source of instability.

Despite government attempts to suppress information about these incidents, opposition figures continue to expose details through social media, he added.

Public reaction to the Zahedan attack laid bare the government's eroding credibility, with Iranians condemning the violence yet criticizing the weak security measures that enabled the breach, al-Sayed said.

Others openly celebrated the assault as a "victory" and ridiculed security forces' inability to prevent it, he added, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction with government incompetence.

Security breakdown

The Zahedan assault represents a dangerous escalation in domestic threats that Iranian security services appear unable to address effectively, military expert Mansour al-Shehri told Al-Fassel.

The attack demonstrates that groups such as Jaysh al-Adl, which claimed responsibility for the assault, have evolved beyond random violence to execute sophisticated operations, he said.

These include attacks on state institutions that put national security at risk.

Targeting judicial centers and other government buildings strikes at the heart of state authority, undermining official prestige while exposing security services' fundamental inadequacies, al-Shehri added.

The country's vast and challenging terrain enables armed groups to operate with relative impunity, hiding weapons and moving freely while overwhelmed security forces struggle to maintain control amid widespread unrest, he said.

Years of neglected border control in favor of systemic corruption by regime authorities have enabled rampant smuggling across Iran's borders, including weapons smuggling, while the government's focus on evading international sanctions has diverted attention from domestic security threats.

The combination of economic hardship, the regime's institutionalized discrimination and oppression of ethnic and religious minorities, and security failures create conditions that could produce "completely undesirable results" if current trends continue, with tensions potentially reaching explosive levels, he warned.
