Houthis tighten security grip using proxy survival tactics
Devastating Houthi losses trigger deep anxiety over potential abandonment by the Iranian regime.

Devastating losses under Operation Epic Fury fuel Houthi fears of Iranian abandonment, forcing "proxy survival tactics" to tighten their security grip.
These tactics, including accusing individuals of "espionage," neutralizing opponents, and using "scorched earth," prepare them for regional war if the regime commands, analysts said.
On April 8, a Houthi sniper killed 70-year-old citizen Mohammed Farhan Ali Abdo in the al-Zahra neighborhood east of Taiz, local sources reported.
"The Houthis' panic over Iranian abandonment after military losses drives their desperate proxy tactics," Muhammed al-Omda, head of the Yemeni Network for Rights and Freedoms told Al-Fassel.
Consequently, the Houthis tighten security and eliminate dissidents, preparing to expand the regional conflict if Tehran orders it.
"Accusations of espionage and neutralizing opponents are tactics designed to tighten security and fortify the Houthi domestic front amidst rapidly unfolding regional uncertainty," he noted.
Security labels like "espionage" or "external agents" are employed to target and justify the elimination of specific individuals or internal groups.
The Iranian regime's collapse mandates the Houthis seize absolute, non-reliant control of northern Yemen for their continued survival.
The group enforces a "scorched earth" policy, burning houses and destroying property in rebellious districts to visually deter communities from tax revolts or recruitment resistance.
"Facing a paranoia of desertion from the Iranian regime, the Houthis consolidate security using proxy survival narratives," al-Omda said.
The dynamic reflects existential apprehension, yet a readiness to launch Iranian-requested regional surprise attacks.
