Kilis - Gas exports from Azerbaijan to Syria began on August 2, 2025. The initiative marks a significant step in addressing Syria’s energy shortages and enhancing regional cooperation.

Initial exports will be 1.2 billion cubic meters (m³) annually, and expected to double to 2 billion m³ per year in subsequent phases.

A Collaborative Energy Initiative

The natural gas is transported through Turkey’s pipeline infrastructure, managed by BOTAŞ Petroleum Pipeline Corporation, the Turkish state-owned operator.

Under a swap agreement, Azerbaijan supplies the gas to Turkey, which then facilitates its delivery to Syria at the Yavuzlu border crossing.

This project is backed financially by the Qatar Development Fund, ensuring the necessary logistics for smooth operations.

The gas is distributed to power plants in Aleppo and Cender gas power plant in Homs province.

This step is expected to significantly boost Syria’s power generation capacity, extending electricity availability to up to 10 hours daily in targeted areas.

Addressing Syria’s Energy Needs

Syria has long struggled with electricity shortages due to years of conflict and limited infrastructure. Azerbaijani gas promises to be a game-changer, increasing electricity generation capacity by up to 1.2–1.3 gigawatts.

Approximately 5 million households stand to benefit from the initiative. There are plans to extend supply to thermal power plants near Damascus, such as the Nasiriyye and Tishrin facilities, in future phases.

Agreements and Strategic Goals

This collaboration was formalized through a memorandum of understanding signed on July 14, 2025, Damascus and the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The agreement covers natural gas supplies, energy cooperation, and oil exploration.

In a statement, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar emphasized the commercial nature of the gas supply. “The plan is to increase gas volumes to 2 billion m³ in the future,” reiterated Bayraktar.

Regional Impact

The initiative strengthens ties between Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Syria, showcasing the growing role of the energy sector as a key priority for the region.

It also highlights the strategic importance of robust infrastructure in facilitating regional energy cooperation.

With expanded electricity availability and improved infrastructure, this project offers hope to millions of Syrians seeking energy stability after years of hardship.
